When travelling outside of the Netherlands be sure to check the required documents. You need a valid residence permit, passport and possibly a visa. Travels within the Schengen area do not require a visa if you have a Dutch residency permit card.
To be able to travel back to the Netherlands you need to show that you have a valid residence permit. If you need a visa before you leave, you must apply for it at the embassy or consulate of the country you want to visit. Also make sure to check which insurances are needed, if you have the required vaccinations and which medications need a medication certificate. When you are going on a trip abroad, but your residence permit is temporarily no longer valid or your residence permit expires during your trip, you will need a return visa to travel back to the Netherlands. When travelling with children it’s good to make sure which legal documents are needed. For example when only one of the legal guardians is accompanying the child/ren or they travel with the grandparent/s, you need to show a permission form from the legal guardian/s. You also need to bring a copy of the passport/ID of the parent staying behind and a recent extract of the Personal Record Database (BRP) or birth certificate.
