There are various opportunities to pursue continuing education as an adult in the Netherlands.

Higher education

Open Universiteit Nederland (Groningen, Emmen, Leeuwarden) is an independent, government-funded institution for distance learning at university level, making higher education accessible to anyone, regardless of formal qualifications.

De Volksuniversiteit (Emmen, Groningen, Hoogeveen, Leeuwarden, Meppel), which means folk university in Dutch, is an institution for non-formal adult education. The course programs are open to everyone without regard to prior training, age or background. They offer a wide variety of courses, including languages, creativity, communication, computer skills, food, art and culture. For many courses, basic Dutch knowledge is needed, but there are also some courses for non-Dutch speakers offered in English.

Adult vocational education

The vast majority of MBO (middelbaar beroepsonderwijs) programmes in the northern region offer intermediate vocational education, which includes a wide range of adult education courses, but they are primarily in Dutch.
