If you have a bank account from an EU country, chances are you do not need a Dutch bank account. However, you will need one if you would like to work in the Netherlands.

A lot of Dutch banks now offer to open your account online. So you can just choose a bank that you wish to sign up for and register on their website. Since opening up an account can be done online, many banks now have fewer business hours. And in some cases, you can only go to the bank if you have an appointment. With either ABN AMRO or ING Bank, you can open a bank account without your BSN number as long as you have proof of address in the Netherlands. You do need to provide the extract from the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP) which shows your BSN on it within 90 days.

  • Obtain financial advice
  • Obtain insurances and mortgages

Most banks also offer additional services, such as special children’s bank accounts (e.g., savings plans), financial advice, foreign currency accounts, and overdraft protection.

It might help to check with your bank whether an English website is available and if there are special cooperation services with your bank in your home country. Also keep in mind that most international transfers will require a SWIFT or ABA number and there might be additional costs involved.
