RUG Language Centre
The Language Centre offers language courses in Dutch, English and many other languages. They also offer free online Dutch course!
Even though Dutch people usually speak very good English, it is highly recommended to learn Dutch.
In the Northern Netherlands, you might have problems communicating with older people if you cannot speak Dutch, and locals will appreciate if you make an effort to speak Dutch. It will also help you in your daily life and integrating into the community.
There are many types of language courses available, from home tutoring to evening classes and intensive courses. Many Universities and MBO education institutes, libraries, community centres and private language schools offer Dutch lessons on different levels. You can search online for the different options in your area.
The University of Groningen language center offers a free MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) for an introduction to Dutch (and Frisian!) plus online and in person courses in at least 13 languages. Flowently offers a more personalised method. Together with your tutor you can design your personal learning program and learn what is useful to you. You can choose any type of session, language or topic from your Flowently credits. See the topics they offer for learning a language, including civic integration & NT2 state exams.
You can also find courses specifically for integration and preparing for the NT2 language exam at various language schools throughout the North.
We offer different language activities at the IWCN such as the Let’s Talk Dutch! conversation groups in Groningen and the My Local Friend programme which pairs internationals in Groningen who speak at least level A2 Dutch with locals who can help them practice their Dutch skills and facilitate social connections with long-term city residents to help newcomers feel a more meaningful bond with the region.
