Guide to healthcare system in the NL

Posted on: October 19, 2021

Healthcare in the Netherlands is ranked amongst the best in the world. Some things, however, may work differently from what you’re used to. For example, the GP (general practitioner, ‘huisarts’ in Dutch) is the first port of call for care.

Many internationals feel badly informed about Dutch healthcare. They often don’t know where to turn in case of health problems. This was showed by a study performed by H4i and health insurer HollandZorg.

The saying ‘people fear what they don’t understand’ appears to apply here: less well informed migrants tend to have less faith in the Dutch doctors and their diagnoses. Luckily, the opposite also applies: migrant workers who feel well-informed trust the GP more and feel safer in the Dutch healthcare system.

This is why Healthcare 4 internationals have developed an online ‘guide’ to understanding healthcare, optimized for smartphone use. You can choose your topic and read the clear answers in this guide.
