Dutch and non-Dutch Population

The north of the Netherlands is spread over one-fifth of the area of the Netherlands, despite having only one-tenth of the population. It is the least densely populated region of the Netherlands, with a total population of 1.733.032 on 1 January 2021.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, on 1 January 2020 there were 61.890 foreigners living in the Northern Netherlands, consisting of  31.557 in Groningen, 18.102 in Friesland and 12.231 in Drenthe.
