Required Documents for Non-EU citizens

List of documents required for BRP registration at the Municipality:

  • Proof of ID:  Valid passport or country ID.
  • MVV visa, if applicable. Citizens of Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States of America, South Korea, or Vatican City do not need an MVV.
  • Proof of address:  Signed rental contract, property bill of sale, or signed statement of current resident that the registrant is allowed to live with them plus a copy of the current resident’s passport.
    The address must be within one of the participating municipalities (Assen, Eemsdelta, Emmen, Groningen, Heerenveen, Het Hogeland, Leeuwarden, Midden-Groningen, Noordenveld, Smallingerland, Súdwest-Fryslân or Veendam).
  • Proof of birth:  Birth certificate – should list your name, the names of your parents, the date of birth, and place of birth.
    Birth certificates from most Non-EU countries will require legalization for use in the Netherlands.
    If the certificates are not written in Dutch, English, French or German, they must first be translated into one of these languages by a certified translator. Both the original language certificate and the translation should then be submitted for legalization, if required.
    Chinese citizens require 3 proofs of birth.
  • Proof of marital status, if applicable:  Marriage, registered partnership and divorce certificate(s) –
    Marriage, registered partnership and divorce certificates from most Non-EU countries will require legalization for use in the Netherlands.
    If the certificates are not written in Dutch, English, French or German, they must first be translated into one of these languages by a certified translator. Both the original language certificate and the translation should then be submitted for legalization, if required.
    Chinese citizens require 3 proofs of marriage.
  • Completed Marriage/Registered Partner form: plus copies of the IDs of both partners. This is NOT required if both partners have an EU nationality or if the the marriage took place more than 10 years ago.
  • Completed Municipal registration form: one for each person in the family.

NOTE: ALL OF THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS NEED TO BE COMPLETE, CORRECT, and DELIVERED ON TIME IN ORDER TO USE THE ACCELERATED FORMALITIES SERVICES AT THE IWCN.
