Water usage

When you move into your house, you should notify the water company of the change in residence and give them the meter reading. Water is connected to your house when you move in. Payments are made quarterly through the regional water companies:

Cost of utilities also varies per company, personal usage, and number of people. Again, in general, one can expect to pay the following monthly rates, based on the Dutch normal usage for 1 person:

  • Water: ~10-20 euros per month

The tap water in the Netherlands is of high quality and therefore considered drinkable.

Water Tax

Inaddition to paying for usage of water, everyone in the Netherlands pays a water tax to clean waste water and maintain the system of dykes and canals and pumping stations to help keep the country from flooding.

The amount of the tax also varies per company, value of property and number of people living in the house. Again, in general, one can expect to pay the following yearly rate for 1 person:

  • ~150 euros per year
